moon cloth

I worked from the back of the cloth, cutting strips off the bottom and couching them in angles and circles.
The fabric became so energized with hand work and marks I could hardly hold it.

I was inspired by the rotation of the moon, female figurines from pre-history and the immensity of our raw and vulnerable inner selves.

Newgrange

Ned and I are in Ireland this week.  Yesterday we visited Newgrange, designated as a world heritage site by Unesco.   This is the entrance stone and the magical solar worship roof box .
It was the carvings of spirals and other archetypal symbols that moved me the most.  The fact that this huge monument was built 500 years before the pyramids of Egypt was  awe inspiring.
The walls were covered with white quartz and a dot pattern made from water washed granite, both of which had to be brought many miles.
Around the base of the mound are 97 curb stones - many of them carved with spirals.

It's beautiful and it's large and it's ancient and it's spiritual.  You can judge the scale by Ned's figure above.
A link to more information about this spiritual place click here.

The spiral carvings are what will last with me.

My writing will be spotty over the next few weeks.

survival

We had a twenty four hour power outage on Friday. Unable to do simple errands like mail parcels or pay bills at the bank because computers were down, I had time to photograph this book. It's called Survival Book and is one of the first pieces I completed after our move to Manitoulin in the early 90's. It's a collection of acrylic paintings of found goddess imagery combined with text about insomnia. Ned and I heated soup for dinner on the wood stove, read by candle light, went to bed early.
The power returned around noon, Saturday.

akrasia, a new word for me

Why do we fail to carry out what we choose to do?
Akrasia is the inability to carry out what we plan to do. According to Aristotle it has has two parts.
a) weakness of will
b) impetuousness

This information is from the book, The Vehement Passions by Philip Fisher . I'm starting my dissertation research with learning more about the emotions.

I continue to stitch this piece of linen.

intuition

I brought this piece of en caustic printed linen with me as a sample for the workshop, but did not get to start stitching into it until everything was over.

I don't KNOW what I'm doing, but it is a great comfort to me just to stitch while talking with my dad.

We watch Coronation street and the news together.

I stitch.
