It's only a piece of cloth.

I used to tell my students that it was only a piece of paper when I taught watercolour. I told them this so that they would loosen up and take risks.

I used to look at my work in cloth as a way to save myself. I made quilts. They were weighty. They were precious. I looked at it as a responsible act, like parenting is.

But now I say, It's only a piece of cloth.

It doesn't need to be bed sized.
It doesn't need to be heavy.
It doesn't need to protect..
It can't.

What can it do? Not, what should it do?

It can communicate poetically.
That's what I hope.

Only a cloth with a negative imprint.
Only each stitch.
It is enough.

open vessels of any kind ..upside or downside , really resonate with me.
very gentle,comforting only cloth.

i've missed dropping by, popping in . . . and now i see that i was meant to stop by this very day when i wrestle with "the committee member" who wags a finger and cautions me about 3 layers and finished edges and such notions. i think i'm about to hold a firing squad and get back to creating the cloth that suits and soothes me. thank you. xo
