Fragile as a Leaf in Autumn

The feminist movement was important in the development of the art quilt.

"This movement, which formed with the diverse goals of securing equal political and economic rights for women, also fostered a deep abiding interest in traditional female craft." Penny McMorris

Women artists have increased in stature since the 70's and there are more of us. Many women artists have discovered quilt making. It is not surprising that a group of serious quilt artists has emerged in the last quarter of the 20th century. However, quilts are still not accepted as fine art in the male dominated art world.

Hi Judy,
You're fighting for quilters recognition, we're fighting for textile artists recognition by the so called 'world of fine arts' here in the uk and we are setting up a regional textile forum to fly the flag perhaps we could link up with a transatlantic project sometime. Hope the degree's going ok.
