“Why have there been no great women artists?”
It is said that women artists are more inward looking. More delicate. The problem lies not with what femininity is but with what art is. It is naïve to think that art is just a direct, personal expression of individual emotional experience. Art is more than this. The making of art involves a self-consistent language of form. A language that has to be learned and practised. A language embodied in paint, stone, clay, plastic, metal and yes...fabric. Line. Shape. Balance. All those things. Art is not a sob story. It is not a confidential whisper.
paraphrased from Linda Nochlin's essay
