It's been a while since I've done photo transfers, but just last week I taught the heat transfer method in my art quilting class. The papers have become more accessible since the 90's and they are user friendly for anyone with basic photo shop skills and an ink jet printer. heat transfer on cotton, the photograph cropped, enlarged, inverted, flipped, colour enhanced etc




The above samples were made before or during the class. I wonder if I can use this method in some real work.

Marc Chagall

Double Portrait with a Glass of Wine" 1917, oil on canvas. The artist was 30 years old when he painted this. His paintings are usually dream scapes or childhood narratives, every day worlds full of the wonderful and miraculous. Chagall is famous for his use of colour and his central theme of LOVE.


Naata Nungurrayi

Untitled 2002, acrylic on canvas. The artist was 70 years old when she painted this. Born 1932, she has led a traditional nomadic bush life and now paints instinctively, using line, colour, and form in an immediate and breath taking way.

I'm prepping to teach painting tomorrow and am trying not to fall back on my own familiar ways. It's so difficult to push myself over into the unknown.

This piece was made by Gasali Adeyemo.

I purchased it from him at the Surface Design Association's 2007 conference in Kansas City. I studied traditional Yoruba indigo techniques with Gasali at that time.



The piece below is from the 50's and I bought it from Gasali too. My once a month art quilting class was yesterday and I set up my studio with the thought: "If I were attending this class, what would I like to see when I walk through the door?"

reverse applique

I'ts a relief to take a wee break from preparing all the technical hand books and design board samples that need to be shipped to England for assessment. Yesterday I cleaned the studio, today I prepare for tomorrow's art quilting classes.

Both the day and the evening sessions have attracted women with a wide range of sewing abilities (and ages). I hope that everyone becomes as inspired as I am with the open ended technique of reverse applique. It's so much fun to draw with cloth that I have to force myself to stop making samples.
