My big idea

My big idea is to give enough information for my viewer to enter their own re-discovered inner world, but not too much.
Not too much information. The viewer needs to discover it.
I also want to remind the viewer that life is short, art is long.
A wabi sabi kind of thing. I want the work to hold its own destruction,
but the holding, the touching,
the idea of nurturance and
reparation
will also be present.
It's almost a spiritual thing. A belief.
A faith.
That we will go on.
Not knowing what lies ahead, we do go on.

Fragile as a Leaf in Autumn

The feminist movement was important in the development of the art quilt.

Women artists have increased in stature since the 70's and there are more of us. Many women artists have discovered quilt making. It is not surprising that a group of serious quilt artists has emerged in the last quarter of the 20th century. However, quilts are still not accepted as fine art in the male dominated art world.

Humans are so very fragile. For the most part we are able to forget this. That we are fragile. That our bodies and our minds are very very fragile.

Beauty

I've have been reading about modern art. I am struck by the idea put forward by many contemporary painters that representational art is too concerned with the surface beauty of things. Art should not be about objectivity but transcendence. Beauty lies not in verisimilitude but in balance.

Overwhelmed

I have taken on several diverse and disparate artistic activities, each of which need an equal amount of attention. Last week I received a "congratulations" card from the Toronto Outdoor Art Show which happens July 7,8,9 in Toronto. Then, over the weekend the Opus School of Textile Art sent six courses for downloading through the computer. Although I am looking forward to this in-depth study of drawing, contemporary art theory and embroidery, it will take discipline to fit it into what seems to be an already full schedule.
