counting my blessings

counting my blessings   1999  about 80" x 90"  velveteen, cotton, chenille threads, machine pieced, hand applique, hand embroidery, hand quilting.
The vertical panel in the middle is like a child's counting book.  one - two  - three - four
We have four children.
On the back of the quilt I wrote the names of mother artists with more than two children.  Two writers:  Alice Munro  - 3 kids and Carol Shields -  5 kids
two visual artists:  painter Mary Pratt - 4 children , sculptor Barbara Hepworth - triplets

Looking for role models, I read about their lives to find out how they balanced their blessings with their creativity.

I love how you pay tribute. This is quite a sucky note, Sugar. Quite a beautiful reminder that others have juggled before you and are cheering you on. Another moving gem clip on The Big Calendar.

Judy,

I am very interested about the "frame" design on the back of this quilt. When I look at this I see a frame honoring artist work, but with the black,I also wonder if it pays tribute the the mother artists that came before you.

Your thoughts?

For sure I am wishing to honour my role models.

I'm interested in what might be read into the black background. I used the black because of the visual contrast and because it related to the front of the quilt.

Tina, could you tell me what you see or feel in this regard? Then I might be able to respond more clearly.

I was a bit angry when I made the back. I felt that so many artist who were also mothers just didn't speak about it. Kids were not mentioned in the 90's.

p.s. Three, not two, of the mother artists split with the fathers. my mistake.

Judy,

I was thinking that the black in the middle of the frame might be honoring the women artists who had passed away, and the living women artists you admire were embroidered on the actual frame.

Hopefully that helps.

Judy,

Btw, I do love the colors in this quilt and the beautiful work.

Tina, that is a beautiful interpretation. I love it.

thinking further about the black out in the center of the reverse side - if we are looking for meaning, maybe it refers to the anonymity of our fore mothers who were artists and mothers.
