Quilts are the best

 I'm home from my dad's.
At least for a little while.
We sleep better with the weight and warmth of quilts than we do with a duvet. We tried a duvet, but at least in the winter, quilts are best.   How about you?

Definitely a quilt person here! Two in winter; one (or none) in summer, depending. My daughter got the down duvet when I moved; she uses it all winter and switches to a quilt (which I made) in the summer. Alas, she refers to quilts as 'blankets' so...she doesn't quite 'get it'...yet.

I'm a quilter....but I LOVE my duvets. I use a lighter one in summer but it's duvets all the way for me.

Thanks for these replies.

We really thought that we would prefer duvets. Our children do, and they are on our guest beds for when the kids come home.

I looked at positively. Since my quilts were no longer "useful" - then they would not have so much problem being considered art.

But this winter - Ned and I have returned to the weight and beauty of hand made quilts and packed the duvet away until the summer time.

I totally agree Judy. Quilts just have that perfect weight... :) Yours are lovely. :)

I love the weight of blankets and a quilt. It just feels so much cozier.

To be honest I've never slept under quilts...I always seem to give them away and I dont have a quilt of my own (maybe something I should put on my list!!!)

Your quilts are beautiful...I love the colour combinations and can only imagine sleeping under their weight.

Both: a quilt layered over the duvet! Summer sucks when we have to shed the heavy layers.

I love your quilts to look at, but I am addicted to my comforter, I double it over and that adds to the weight. (I'm on my third attempt to post! AURGH@#@!--not that what I have to add is important...just want you to know I'm looking in, In fact I included a link to your last gorgeous post with the Emily poem in my last post.

i like both, actually, but in deep winter, down for me. with wool blankets, and flannel sheets. the thing about down i don't like: the sound of the high count cotton covers. the thing about quilts i don't like, necessary weight for warmth. lofty wool is lovely.

Quilts are the best for sleeping under. For winter, I have my blue and white 9 patch quilt, then on top of that is my quilt made from my concert t-shirts, and on top of that is my first flannel quilt. I like the weight and if I get too warm I just throw off a layer.

Quilts are just beautiful but, in the absence of one in my home, I sleep under and African blanket in the winter, which feels very romantic, along with the duvet which, unlike sheets and blankets, doesn't try to strangle one in the middle of the night!
Love the colour in your quilts and the way the sunlight falls across them and highlights the texture - no duvet can match that!

I'm like Karen, a quilt over a duvet. The weather here is a three quilt night, VERY cold like the old days.

Living in Alaska, quilts are always on the beds.

The bed has a store-bought quilt and a homemade patchwork panels quilt and flannel sheets!!! Really too hot for California...and me! But I share the bed :)
However, when napping on the couch I've gotta have my super duper soft man-made, not natural materials fuzzy blanket. I just love the super soft, even if I hate when it gets full of electricity!!!
It's fun reading everyone's choices here :)

I love quilts, I am so blessed to have several of my grandmothers hand pieced hand quilted quilts. She passed about 20 years ago at age 86. Her quilts mean the world to me, I love them summer or winter.

At our house, it's both - the duvet under the quilt - that extra weight is so comforting in winter, even in mild England. And seeing the quilt covering the bed during the day brings on a feeling of contentment.

Quilts. Definitely quilts. Just getting the filler stuffed into the duvet cover exhausts me enough to require a 3-day nap . . . a nap under a quilt, of course.

It used to be a quilt over a duvet in the winter and sheet with quilt in summer. Now its sheet one thin blanket and two quilts in winter and sheet and quilt in summer, it makes for a better night sleep...... When my son and daughter left home they both took their quilts with them. They both use duvets with a quilt over the top. All the quilts are made by me and its nice to know that they are used and not just kept in a cupboard.

Is there a query re. art vs utilitarian embedded here?

My favorite thing to sleep under is a thin old soft cotton sheet with my feet sticking out -- which means it is rather warm and yes, when I lived in New England, the weight of a quilt would seem a fortress against the cold.
