Newgrange

 Ned and I are in Ireland this week.  Yesterday we visited Newgrange, designated as a world heritage site by Unesco.   This is the entrance stone and the magical solar worship roof box .
It was the carvings of spirals and other archetypal symbols that moved me the most.  The fact that this huge monument was built 500 years before the pyramids of Egypt was  awe inspiring.
 The walls were covered with white quartz and a dot pattern made from water washed granite, both of which had to be brought many miles.
 Around the base of the mound are 97 curb stones - many of them carved with spirals.

It's beautiful and it's large and it's ancient and it's spiritual.  You can judge the scale by Ned's figure above.
A link to more information about this spiritual place click here.

The spiral carvings are what will last with me.

My writing will be spotty over the next few weeks.

Cool that you visited Newgrange! Its high on my list... I often think of the Newgrange stones when drawing my spirals - there's a certain color ink that speaks of them. Thanks for the photos!!

Into The Twilight

OUT-WORN heart, in a time out-worn,
Come clear of the nets of wrong and right;
Laugh, heart, again in the grey twilight,
Sigh, heart, again in the dew of the morn.

Your mother Eire is always young,
Dew ever shining and twilight grey;
Though hope fall from you and love decay,
Burning in fires of a slanderous tongue.

Come, heart, where hill is heaped upon hill:
For there the mystical brotherhood
Of sun and moon and hollow and wood
And river and stream work out their will;

And God stands winding His lonely horn,
And time and the world are ever in flight;
And love is less kind than the grey twilight,
And hope is less dear than the dew of the morn.

Humbling ....

That amazing wall, dotted with the stones, the curb stones and those wonderful spirals. Spirals, like circles are very spiritual. It truly blows you away that all of those thousands of years ago people were carving symbols, patterns, designs... and the awesome beauty that remains for us today.

Thanks for sharing your images of Ireland with us.

Safe travels to you and Ned.

love your photos of Newgrange Judy, what a magical place! there's a beautiful Journey Rock in the grounds of the Museum of Art in Ottawa ... I don't know who carved it but it is a strong piece the way it stands & the feel of the stone has stayed with me since 2005 when I visited that beautiful city...
