Immensity is within ourselves

I want to make art that connects my viewer to his or her inner world. I want to reach people in a poetic way. With an emotional simplicity. There is time and labour within the work. I want to remind people of what it feels like to look at the horizon I want to work very large, very simply, but with evident labour. I want my handwork to be obvious, perhaps stitched, then removed, then marked again, then removed again. A worn down historical type idea. That we go on. I want to approach my work as if I have all the time I need.

I'm busy this week preparing work to mail to England for my last assessment before the exhibition next June. I am not sure if this will be the exhibition work but I am getting closer. I'm sending eight pieces in my portfolio, plus the many sketchbooks and notes I've made over the last three months.

“Immensity is within ourselves. It is attached to a sort of expansion of being that life curbs and caution arrests, but which starts again when we are alone.” Gaston Bachelard

Hi Judy, very best wishes for your assessment. Is your exhibition in the UK? I would love to come to see your work up close for I admire it greatly as I do your words. Am very taken with your quotation today. penny

You are describing exactly the kind of work I want to do in about ten years' time, Judy. I know I'm not grown up enough for it yet - not immense enough maybe. I hope I will grow. Good wishes for the assessment.

So eloquently stated.
And you do just that type
of work so well.

The last piece, the rather large piece, is stunning as is...even viewed via computer screen. It must be breathtaking to see in person.

"In a poetic way," I especially like this. You've described something so beautifully in this post, something so hard to pin down and express. Thank you.

I really admire the time and effort you put into your work and your idea of working as though you have all the time you need. Its something that I will reflect and act on, instead of wanting everything finished yesterday. Good luck with your assessment and I too would like to know where your final exhibition will be?

Velma said it - breathtaking work I AM traveling in it... the shimmering veils are mists. I'm thinking how Rothko would have loved this! Sometimes a work can speak to one's inner quiet places with poetry - and its own quiet immensity. I am deeply moved by this piece. Many, many times I am deeply moved by nature, and music and living beings, its rare and such a gift when I am by a piece of artwork. I sometimes wonder why that is, considering I make art... I have my musings on this.... but, for now, just THANKS!

Also, I love your words.

your blog is a must read for me. you emanate inner peace and a soul that has learned to eliminate the background noise to focus on what is important.

As Stitching Life said, " You're describing exactly the kind of work I want to do." but I have to first achieve stiching life's level. Your work always uplifts my spirit and gives me the persistence to carry on.
