Quilting in a hoop

Over the last three weeks, I have been finishing the hand quilting in the Earth Ark meditation panel. The stitch design was inspired by Emily Carr's paintings of Canadian skies. At first I used a small (14" diameter) strong circular plastic hoop. It goes anywhere - here in the dining room at the cottage. I prefer my oval wooden hoop. It goes anywhere too - here on my father's condo balcony. An oval hoop allows you to see more of your design, but is not as unwieldly as a circular hoop of the same size. (28") I've tried to purchase a new one but they are hard to find. Mine is 30 years old. Herman

Beautiful! As much as I love the new ways, I love the old ways more. Perhaps I should return to hand quilting, but this time in an art quilt.

I don't believe I've ever seen an oval hoop. I have a square one, which can also be quite hard to find.

I would love to have a large oval hoop! I have a small one that is perfect for so many of my stitchings. I have so enjoyed watching Earth Ark evolve. It is a beautiful work. You are a wonderful inspiration!

I also have an oval hoop. A tiny one that I don't even remember where it came from. And always thought that I was the only person who considered it to be more confortable than the circular one...

i adore my large oval hoops! most of which were culled from various thrift stores around the country on my various travels. i use them to teach hand work and most of my students tend to echo your thoughts on them as well!

your earth ark meditation quilt is stunning! it's been wonderful to see unfold!
